The first digit (x) refers to the car’s size while (y) refers to the model’s number and hence, newer cars have higher numbers. To cite an example, the 505 is bigger yet older than the 307. The Peugeot cars which have won the prestigious European Car Awards are Peugeot 504, Peugeot 405, and Peugeot 307.
